• What is Internal Medicine?

    How is an Internist different than a General Medicine Doctor? Internal medicine is a broad-based specialty that has its roots in primary care and is dedicated to providing primary and specialty care to adults. Internists diagnose and manage diseases involving any of the organ systems and are specially trained to manage seriously ill patients suffering from advanced illness and/or diseases of more than one system. After completing medical school, to become an internist requires additional training that takes 4 years. education.

    To see an internist, you will need a referral from your doctor. You can download the referral form on this page and have it emailed/faxed to our office. If you don’t have a referral, we can arrange to have you see one of our doctors to facilitate your referral. Please contact the clinic to book an appointment.

    Once we have your referral, our intake team will review and connect with you in less than 48 hours to discuss the next step. During your visit, your trusted internist will review your medical history and deliver a customized approach to your specific health care needs. Like a Primary Care Physician (PCP), an internist will create a long-term professional relationship with both you and your family.

Dr. Chris Gallivan is a Canadian trained physician and was practicing academic medicine at Dalhousie University in Halifax for the past several years, before recently locating to Toronto. He has consistently demonstrated excellent problem-solving skills on a daily basis in his clinical practice working with patients not only to come up with the proper diagnosis but also to address their individual needs and concerns. As a general Internist, many of his patients have chronic issues such as diabetes and obesity requiring a multidisciplinary approach focusing on wellness and lifestyle changes. He will see patients with chronic illnesses, like heart failure, diabetes, and hypertension, to patients with acute problems, like sprains and sinus infections. In addition to his outpatient clinic and frequent work on the inpatient general medicine service, Dr. Gallivan has also been responsible for leading a team of up to 8 resident physicians and medical students. He frequently worked with diverse groups of other physicians as well as with nurses and other allied healthcare professionals, allowing him to use communication and teamwork skills I have developed over my career.
