Nurture Your Skin This Summer (And Always)

By Doctor Tamarah Chaddah, Naturopath

Skin Protection - Simcoe Place Health ClinicWith the bright days of summer upon us, it is absolutely imperative to protect your skin. Even on grey, sunless days you can be exposed to the sun’s harmful rays.

In fact, 80 percent of rays pass through clouds on an overcast day, leaving you at risk for skin damage. And don’t forget about your commute or work days – you are also exposed to damaging UV rays while driving a car or sitting by a sunny office window.

Protect Your Skin With the Right Product

When looking for sun protection, look for a product with an SPF of at least 30 as it will protect nearly 97 percent of radiation. Frequent application is also a must to ensure you are protected throughout the day.  The best sunscreen is one that offers adequate protection from both UVA and UVB rays, is easy to use, and feels good on your skin.

Many of my patients complain of breakouts from using a liquid sunscreen. In this case, I suggest using a mineral loose powder from Proderm. It is a lightweight formula that can be dusted over your makeup so you can apply it anywhere, avoid breakouts and still get the protection you need!

Healthy Skin

Everyone wants their skin to look healthy and hydrated. This is especially true in the summer months when we are exposing more of it!

Did you know skin is the biggest organ of the body? It plays a key role in protecting against external pathogens and excessive water loss.

When skin is dry, it causes scales, elasticity loss and even itching. This is associated to the failure of the skin to retain water. To help prevent dry, damaged skin, make sure you drink enough water throughout the day and minimize your skin’s exposure to harmful environmental factors (such as sun or wind), or lifestyle factors (such as sleep deprivation, tobacco, external agents) as they can cause the skin to become unbalanced and feeling dry.

Nurture Your Whole Body

I often find that we remember to moisturize and take care of our facial skin, but sometimes forget about our body. To help, Simcoe Place Health Clinic is introducing three new products by Uradin to our skincare line:

  • Uradin 10 – Provides 24h intense hydration
  • Uradin Gel Oil – Repairs and hydrates dry and cracked feet
  • Uradin Spray and Go – Hydrates on the go

Uradin provides daily body hydration that responds to the needs of your skin. Its exclusive formula with Urea Isdin plus emollients ingredients help to restore your skin’s natural smoothness.

Since we are on the topic of healthy looking skin, this month’s recipe is rich with Omega-3’s. Omega-3’s help to stop the inflammation and the breakdown of collagen, thereby slowing the aging process. If you are not a seafood fan, you can incorporate avocados, chia seeds, flaxseeds, and walnuts into your diet, all of which are rich in Omega 3 fatty acids. Check out the full recipe here.
