5 Ways to Promote Wellness in Your Workplace
By Team Simcoe Health
Paying attention to your mental and physical well-being during your workday is extremely important. A buildup of stress can not only affect your work performance, but can also lead to numerous health conditions, including depression, hypertension and diabetes, to name a few.
Whether you’re an employee or HR professional, there are a number of benefits to introducing wellness programs and activities at your workplace.
With fall offering a great opportunity to reset and start a new, here are a few simple ways you can help improve health and wellness in your workplace.
1. Encourage Healthy Eating in the Workplace
Stress affects everyone differently, but for many of us, it manifests in bad eating. Reaching for comfort food or the fastest meal option can work against your health as these foods often contain high levels of fat, sodium and sugar.
Instead of grabbing quick and easy meals, or eating as an afterthought, work as a team within your workplace to encourage healthy eating. Have a potluck of healthy foods during busy periods, or simply make it a challenge to see who can consistently bring a healthy lunch every day. If you’re looking for some healthy recipe ideas, we have a few in our blog here.
2. Make Fitness a Challenge
Exercise is a fantastic way to relieve stress and improve your overall health. Consider starting a fitness challenge with your coworkers to stay active and accountable.
Whether you have a Fitbit, or a free app on your phone that monitors your steps and activity, you can engage everyone in the workplace to participate by starting step or workout challenges. Encouraging some healthy competition at work is a win-win for everyone.
3. Get Everyone Learning
Many people engage in bad habits simply because they have no idea that what they are doing is harmful to their health!
Help increase the health-related knowledge of your team by holding information sessions or hosting on-site health screenings, or treatments in the workplace for things like cholesterol level, flu shots and even massage therapy. Our team of practitioners are also available to come into your workplace to host health seminars. From healthy eating to stress or sleep management, the options are endless.
4. Get Active and Give Back
You can exercise your heart in more ways than one!
There are numerous charity events in the city that involve physical activity. Consider registering an office team for events like charity walks or fun runs. By getting everyone out for a good cause, not only are you improving your cardio, but you can feel good knowing you are proactively helping others.
5. Make Time for Self-Care and Activities that Relieve Stress
We have covered diet and exercise, but taking time out from the responsibilities of work and life are absolutely necessary for personal health. If what makes you feel better overall are a few minutes of daydreaming, or creative journal writing, then it is important to make time for these activities in your day.
At very least, make sure you use your health benefits to their full extent, so you can address whatever health issues you may have while also practicing proactive self-care. Consider going for a massage, or experiencing the benefits of acupuncture.
Whatever your workload, your best effort requires your best health. Try integrating these workplace wellness tips into your office as a way to take care of yourself at work. You may be surprised to see how much it will benefit yourself and everyone around you!
