- What should I expect in my first session?
In your first session, our mental health professionals will need to ask a number of questions in order to understand your concerns and provide an overview of a treatment plan. You will also have an opportunity to ask any questions you may have about therapy. If necessary, you will be provided with alternative options to make sure you get the treatment you need.
- Is my information kept confidential?
Both psychiatrists and psychologists are highly trained mental health clinicians with strict standards of confidentiality, so you can rest assured that your information will be protected. Your information is not shared without your informed consent and written authorization. During your first session, you will talk more about patient confidentiality.
- Will I be prescribed medications?
Psychiatrists are able to prescribe medications, but psychologists are not trained to prescribe medications in Ontario. However, psychologists are able to work with clients who are on or off of medications and they can collaborate with client’s general practitioner or psychiatrist if requested by the client.
- Are psychological services covered by OHIP?
Psychological services are not covered by OHIP. Most private insurance plans offer some coverage to see a psychologist. It is a good idea to look into your particular plan because the amount of coverage varies widely.
